Seomun Catholic Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the kindness of strangers and the resilience of the Jeju community. While the church itself may not boast centuries of history, its story is deeply intertwined with the modern history of Jeju Island. Officially known as St. Joseph Church, Seomun Catholic Church holds Saturday Mass from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, offering a spiritual haven for locals and visitors alike. Interestingly, Seomun Catholic Church is part of the larger Roman Catholic Diocese of Jeju. This diocese, established in 1971, encompasses the entire Jeju Province and serves a significant Catholic population. Now, let me share a unique story about a different church on Jeju Island. It beautifully illustrates the spirit of community that also resonates here at Seomun Catholic Church. In 1954, a young Columban missionary priest arrived in Hallim, a small township on Jeju’s western coast. He found a small group of Catholics but no church building. One night, an American freighter ran aground near Hallim. The priest, seeing an opportunity, approached the captain. The captain generously offered surplus lumber from the ship. With the help of the small Catholic community and hundreds of island volunteers, the lumber was salvaged. This act of kindness became the foundation of not only a church but also a priest’s house. Later, the same community spirit led to the construction of a second church, a shrine, a retreat house, a monastery, a youth institute, a nursing home, and a hospice. Though this story isn’t directly about Seomun Catholic Church, it echoes the same spirit of community and resilience that you can feel standing here today. Seomun Catholic Church, like the church in Hallim, stands as a symbol of hope and faith.
