How about a journey back in time, right here at Baengnok Elementary School? This school is more than just a place of learning. It represents a significant chapter in Jeju’s history.

Baengnok Elementary School wasn’t always just about classrooms and playgrounds. It once stood as a focal point for a powerful display of Jeju residents’ desire for independence. Imagine it is March 1, 1947. The air is thick with anticipation. It’s the 28th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement.

Now, picture this schoolyard. It is not filled with children playing but with an estimated 25000 to 30000 people. That is about one in ten Jeju residents. They have gathered here at Baengnok Elementary School. Their aim is to express a deep yearning to expel foreign powers. They also want to establish an independent, unified democratic nation.

The commemoration ceremony was carefully planned. The March 1st Commemoration Struggle Jeju Committee organized it on February 17. Ann Sehun was its chairman. The Jeju Committee decided Jeju-eup, Jocheon-myeon and Aeweol-myeon would unite at Baengnok Elementary School for the event. Other villages would hold ceremonies in their own towns.

But the police were not supportive. They wanted to prevent any protests at Baengnok Elementary School. They suggested holding the event near the airfield outside town. But their efforts were futile. At 11 a.m. on March 1st, the commemoration began right here. Tens of thousands of people gathered, overwhelming the police presence.

The event proceeded peacefully. Around 2 p.m., as it concluded and people dispersed, an incident occurred at Gwandukjeong yard. This event marked a significant moment in Jeju’s struggle for independence.

Today, Baengnok Elementary School stands as a reminder of that day. It serves as a symbol of the resilience and determination of the Jeju people. It reminds us of their fight for freedom and unity. As you stand here, remember the thousands who gathered. Think of their hopes for a better future. Baengnok Elementary School is not just a school. It is a living monument to Jeju’s spirit.
