What secrets does Wondang-bong hold? Wondang-bong, also known as Mang Oreum or Samyangbong, stands as a silent witness to Jeju’s rich history. This volcanic cone, while not easily accessible by car and lacking modern amenities, offers a unique experience. The trail leading up Wondang-bong, stretching from Samyang Ilju Road to the Samyang Thermal Power Station, is a popular spot for early morning walks and stunning sunrise views. The name “Wondang-bong” itself tells a story. During the Yuan Dynasty, Wondang Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the Yuan, rested halfway up the cone. Later, in the Joseon Dynasty, the peak served as the site of the Wondang Beacon Fire Station, earning it the name “Mang Oreum,” meaning “beacon oreum.” “Samyangbong” simply reflects its location in Samyang-dong. The name “Wondangchilbong,” or “Samcheopchilbong,” describes its distinctive shape: seven peaks along three ridges.
