Established in 1527, Cimetière Sainte-Hélène in Strasbourg whispers tales of centuries past. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a living history book, nestled near Place de Haguenau. Cimetière Sainte-Hélène began its life on hallowed ground. It replaced the medieval cemetery surrounding the old Sainte-Hélène Church, also known as Rotenkirche. A leprosarium once stood nearby, adding another layer to this place’s rich tapestry. The northern part of Cimetière Sainte-Hélène became a bulwark. Fortified in 1815, it played a role in Strasbourg’s defenses. After Alsace-Lorraine’s cession to Germany in 1870, Strasbourg flourished as the capital of the Reichsland. Cimetière Sainte-Hélène expanded significantly between 1871 and 1918, becoming the final resting place for notable figures. Within Cimetière Sainte-Hélène, prominent figures like Émile Küss, Jean-Louis-Édouard Kratz, and Charles Altorffer found their eternal rest. Küss’s grand pink sandstone stele stands at the cemetery’s central crossroads. The cemetery houses a collective grave for soldiers who fell during the 1870 Siege of Strasbourg. It also holds the remains of historian Adolphe Seyboth, clockmaker Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué, sculptor Joachim-Friedrich Kirstein, botanist Frédéric Kirschleger, and geophysicist Edmond Rothé. Cimetière Sainte-Hélène also showcases the distinctive pink sandstone funerary monuments of sculptor André Friederich. He created monuments for painter Gabriel-Christophe Guérin and notary Jean-Jacques Weigel, among others. Friederich’s own family members, including his first wife Maria Anna, daughter Amélie, and second wife Marie-Antoinette, rest beneath his artistry. Enclosed within Cimetière Sainte-Hélène are plots for aristocratic and bourgeois families like the Dietrichs, Turckheims, Schützenbergers, Oesingers, and Herrenschmidts. Their stories intertwine with the city’s history, creating a fascinating narrative within Cimetière Sainte-Hélène’s walls. Today, the hum of the nearby A35 motorway is a stark contrast to the quiet stories within Cimetière Sainte-Hélène. Yet, the cemetery’s history resonates, offering a poignant connection to Strasbourg’s past.
