The Albert Hall Museum wasn’t always a museum. Originally intended as a town hall by Maharaja Ram Singh. His successor Maharaja Madho Singh II had a different vision. Thanks to Dr Thomas Holbein Hendley’s suggestion it transformed into a showcase for Jaipur’s artistry. It opened its doors to the public in 1887.

Designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob. He was assisted by Mir Tujumool Hoosein. The building perfectly embodies Indo-Saracenic architecture. A fusion of Indian and Islamic design elements. The exterior walls boast scenes from ancient civilizations. Religious texts from the Quran the Bible and Indian epics are inscribed on the upper courtyard walls. Six scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. These colorful murals are based on a 16th-century manuscript.

The museum’s collection is extensive. It showcases Rajasthan’s rich artistic legacy. From paintings and jewelry to carpets ivory and sculptures. The collection even includes coins from various periods. Gupta Kushan Delhi Sultanate Mughal and British.

Colonel Tomas H Hendley played a pivotal role. He meticulously curated the collection. His detailed ledger entries remain an invaluable resource. The Albert Hall Museum grew from an industrial crafts collection for the 1883 Jaipur Exhibition. Hendley introduced guided tours a truly innovative practice. Every Friday was reserved for women visitors a remarkable initiative considering the prevalent purdah system.
