“Two suns?” you might ask, squinting at the gate before us. And you’d be right to wonder! This, my friends, is the Sun Gate, or Suraj Pol as we say in Hindi. It’s one of the seven main gates that once guarded the walled city of Jaipur. Notice those two painted suns on the gate? They’re not just there for decoration. They’re a clue, a hint to this gate’s identity and its connection to the rising sun. See how the Sun Gate faces east? That’s towards the Aravalli hills, where the sun begins its climb each morning. It’s also the direction of the famous sun temple built by Sawai Jai Singh, a ruler with a passion for astronomy. Beyond the sun temple, the gate leads further on to Galta Ji, a sacred pilgrimage site. So, as you pass through the Sun Gate, remember, you’re not just entering a city. You’re stepping through a portal of history, aligned with the cosmos, and bathed in the golden light of a brand new day!
