The roar. The smell of burning rubber. The thrumming vibration under your feet. You are here at the Billown Circuit.

Welcome to the Billown Circuit a legendary motorcycle road racing course. Nestled near Castletown on the Isle of Man this 4.25 mile track has hosted thrilling races since 1955. It’s more than just a racetrack though. It’s a piece of history a testament to the Isle of Man’s rich motorsport heritage.

The Southern 100 the Pre-TT Classic races and the National Road Races all call Billown home. These events draw thousands of spectators and racers from around the globe. Each turn each straight each hairpin bend whispers tales of fierce competition and incredible skill.

Before Billown there was Andreas. But after the closure of the RAF Station there in 1954 the Southern Motor Cycle Club needed a new venue. They proposed a “South TT” using roads around Castletown and Billown Mansion. It wasn’t an easy start. An initial grant request was rejected. But local businesses stepped up. Their generous contributions made the first Southern 100 possible in July 1955. It started as a small club race but it quickly grew into a major event.

The Billown Circuit became a registered circuit in 1956 and a national one in 1957. More races followed including the Pre-TT Classics and the National Road Races. Even the Isle of Man TT itself uses Billown now for the Lightweight TT and the Ultra-Lightweight TT races.

The circuit is more than just speed and skill. It’s a place of legends. Joey Dunlop the “King of Billown” holds the record with 41 wins. Sadly many racers have lost their lives here. This is a stark reminder of the risks involved in this dangerous sport. Each section of the track like Ballanorris now known as “Joey’s Gate” holds its own stories.

The Billown Circuit is constantly evolving. Records are broken and rewritten. The current lap record stands at a breathtaking 2 minutes 12.735 seconds set by Michael Dunlop in 2017. This is an average speed of 115.267 mph a truly incredible feat.

But the Billown Circuit isn’t just about records. It’s about the spirit of competition the camaraderie among riders and the roar of the crowd. It’s a place where history and excitement collide. A place you’ll never forget. So take a moment to absorb the atmosphere. Feel the legacy of this incredible place. The Billown Circuit. A legend in the making.
