Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Isle of Man lies the West Baldwin Reservoir. It’s also known locally as Injebreck Reservoir. This picturesque expanse of water isn’t just a beautiful sight. It holds a fascinating history and plays a vital role in the island’s water supply. The West Baldwin Reservoir was born from a need. The growing town of Douglas needed a reliable water source. Construction began in 1900, a project undertaken by the Douglas Corporation Water Works Department. Imagine the scene back then. A railway line, complete with nine wooden bridges spanning the River Glen, was specially built to transport materials. This ambitious undertaking involved moving a staggering 500,000 long tons of earth to create the dam. The dam itself, completed in 1904, is a marvel of engineering. It stands 22.5 meters high. It has a core of puddle clay, reinforced by carefully zoned earth fill shoulders. The upstream side is protected by thick rubble pitching. The downstream side is gently sloped and covered in grass. This impressive structure holds back 1,364,000 cubic meters of water. The West Baldwin Reservoir isn’t just about engineering. It also holds a hidden secret. When the water level drops significantly, the remnants of a lost village emerge from the depths. These ghostly outlines offer a glimpse into a bygone era. They serve as a reminder of the communities that once thrived in this valley. Today, the West Baldwin Reservoir continues to serve its purpose. It provides water for Douglas, Onchan, and the southern part of the Isle of Man. It is a testament to the foresight and ingenuity of those who built it. It’s a place of quiet beauty, a vital resource, and a poignant reminder of the past.
