High on a hill, St Luke’s Church stands as a serene sentinel. This possibly isolated church graces the Manx countryside in the Baldwin Valley. St Luke’s Church offers more than just a place of worship. It provides breathtaking views.

From St Luke’s door, you can see over Baldwin Valley. On a clear day, the Isle of Anglesey is visible. The church is always open to those seeking refuge or quiet contemplation. You are welcome to experience the picturesque views across the green hills of Ellan Vannin.

St Luke’s Church sits on the site of an old keeil. A keeil is an ancient place of prayer. A cross slab and lintel graves at St. Luke’s Church mark Keeill Abbon. It was the landmark for which the mound was named.

Nearby, a short walk will bring you to the ancient site of the Manx parliament. It is a stone circle known as Killabane. Little is known about the site. But it is believed to have been the site of Tynwald in 1428. The cairn circle serves as a memorial. A bronze plaque from the Manx Museum Trustees was installed in 1928. This marked five centuries since the earliest recorded assembly here.

Despite its isolated feel, St Luke’s is only a 15-minute drive from Douglas. Ample parking makes it quick and convenient to reach this tranquil church. Its rich history awaits you.

From St Luke’s, you can start the Baldwin Bluebell Walk. This trail takes you alongside the River Glass to Injebreck Reservoir. Then, it loops back through the West Baldwin Plantation. When the water is low at the reservoir, the site of an old village emerges. This village existed before the reservoir was built.

In the 19th century, Bishop Ward created combined schoolrooms and chapels. They were for isolated mountainous regions of the island. St Luke’s Baldwin is the church nearest to the geographical centre of the Isle of Man. It stands alongside an ancient keeill and Tynwald Mount. Tynwald Mount was the former site of Tynwald.

The conversion of the Manx to Christianity is attributed to Celtic monks. Most were followers of St. Patrick from Ireland and St. Ninian from Galloway. Many Anglican churches are built on or near former keeills.

Every May, there is a week of Praying the Keeills. It features guided walks and times of reflection at ancient sites. You can tap into the rich Christian heritage. You can visit ancient keeills and today’s churches.
