How about stepping into a realm where myth and history intertwine at the House of Manannan? This museum is named after Manannan. He is the great mythological sea god of the Isle of Man. Inside, you will discover the island’s vibrant Celtic, Viking, and maritime history.

The House of Manannan is located in Peel. It is housed in the former Peel railway station. The original station was built in 1873. However, it closed in September 1968. The Peel line between Douglas and Peel closed at the same time. The building found new life in 1997. It was repurposed and expanded into the museum we see today. The project cost approximately 5.5 million pounds.

In 1998, the House of Manannan received recognition. It was awarded the National Heritage Museum of the Year. The Jersey Maritime Museum in St Helier shared the award.

The museum features permanent exhibitions. They showcase the Isle of Man’s history from the Celtic period to the modern era. A life-size reconstruction of a Celtic roundhouse is there. You can also explore attractions from the 19th century. A replica of a Peel street awaits. Sea stories are also shared.

One of the most notable attractions is Odin’s Raven. It is a two-thirds scale recreation of a Viking longboat. Odin’s Raven was crafted in Norway. It sailed to Peel. It arrived on July 4, 1979. This was part of the High Court of Tynwald’s millennium celebrations.

Besides permanent exhibitions, the House of Manannan hosts temporary themed exhibitions. These are displayed in the exhibition gallery each year.

Before we move on let’s talk about the Norse long ship. It was made in Norway and sailed to the Isle of Man in 1979. This celebrated the millennium of Tynwald. The House of Manannan is an excellent museum for all ages. Plan to spend at least two hours here. There are many interactive sections. They offer amusement for young and old. It is a fun way to view the Isle of Man’s past and present.

The House of Manannan also offers some unique experiences. You can step inside a Celtic roundhouse. You can listen to Egodonas. He is a Celtic storyteller. Hear Manannan speak from the falling waters of Spooyt Vane. Visit a Viking longhouse from Cronk ny Merriu. The island’s stone crosses tell their tales through rising mists. Join the crew of Odin’s Raven. They are returning from the battle of Clontarf. Discover the sights and smells of 19th century Peel. This was during the peak of the Manx Kipper Yard. Visit Spit Corner. Here the superstitions of the fishfolk are told.

Before you leave, visit the gift shop. It offers souvenirs, gifts, and books.

The House of Manannan is more than just a museum. It is a journey through time. It is a celebration of the Isle of Man’s rich heritage. It is a place where legends come to life.
