Who remembers the silent sentinels? The Andreas War Memorial stands as one such sentinel. It’s a terracotta-colored testament to the sacrifices made during wartime. The memorial, recently renovated, stands near St. Andrew’s Church. During World War II, the church’s tower was significantly lowered. This was due to its proximity to the RAF Andreas airfield. The airfield buzzed with activity from 1941 to 1946. Nearby, RAF Jurby operated from 1939 to 1963. Jurby served as a training ground and housed operational squadrons. Sadly, training accidents, sometimes fatal, were a common occurrence. One such tragedy deeply impacted Andreas. In 1940, a Fairey Battle light bomber crashed. It had been towing targets for gunnery practice off the coast. A 17-year-old Andreas resident, John Crellin, witnessed the crash. He even helped recover a body from the wreckage. Eighty years later, a memorial service marked the anniversary at the crash site. Mr. Crellin, now 97, shared his vivid memories. He recounted hearing the engine cut, seeing the plane dive, and the silent aftermath. He described the smell of aviation fuel and the heartbreaking discovery of the young airman. The crew were Sergeant Stanislav Osmala and Aircraftsman 2nd Class Arthur Sharp. The Andreas War Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice. It honors all those affected by the war. It’s a symbol of remembrance, a silent testament to the enduring impact of conflict. The memorial stands near the church, a silent guardian of shared memories and loss. It’s a place where the echoes of the past whisper stories of courage and sacrifice.
