For centuries Hango Hill was used as an execution site. In 1604 William Keruish and Robert Calow were hanged here. Their crime the murder of a man named Cottscam. Their bodies were then buried at Kirk Malew church. Yet Hango Hill’s most infamous execution involved Illiam Dhone. In January 1663 this Manx national hero was shot. His crime participation in the 1651 Manx rising against the Derby family. A broken monument with a plaque stands as a somber testament to his death. The island’s history is complex. It had been invaded by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War.

But the story of Hango Hill doesn’t end with death. Following Illiam Dhone’s execution the Earls of Derby built Mount Strange. This was a summerhouse or banqueting hall. Around 10 meters long only a third remains today due to coastal erosion. Drawings show battlements. It’s been called a blockhouse. It hosted horse races the first Derbys. Its construction signified a shift. Hango Hill was no longer used for executions. By the 19th century executions were carried out at Castle Rushen.

Bishop Barrow placed Hango Hill’s estate in trust in 1668. This trust later founded King William’s College. It sits across the road from the mound.

Today Hango Hill is more than a historic site. It’s a place of remembrance a symbol of Manx identity. Manx nationalists gather here. They hold annual speeches in the Manx language. It has even been used as a film location. A committee of the Tynwald Court worked to preserve its ancient monuments in 1891. A picture of Hango Hill even appeared on a 1966 Manx Revenue stamp.
