Was it merely a gift, or a symbol of enduring loyalty? The Jubilee Clock, standing proudly before us, whispers tales of a bygone era. This magnificent timepiece, located at the intersection of Victoria Street and Loch Promenade, commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign. Donated in 1887 by G.W. Dumbell, the Jubilee Clock is more than just a clock. It is a testament to the deep respect and admiration felt by the people of the Isle of Man for their Queen. The clock wasn’t always as you see it today. Originally, a horse trough graced its base, complete with a drinking fountain for people and a plaque bearing the image of Queen Victoria. The clock’s intricate design, cast by Walter Macfarlane & Co. at the Saracen Works in Glasgow, is shared by only one other known clock in the world: the Hastings Clock in Rotherham, England. This 8-day clock marvel originally operated with a weight descending within the column, and its four faces were illuminated by small gas jets. Today, both the clock mechanism and the lights have been electrified, seamlessly blending the old with the new. Look closely at the details. Imagine the townsfolk gathering around this very spot, horses drinking from the trough, the gas lamps casting a warm glow on the clock faces. The Jubilee Clock has witnessed countless moments in the lives of the people of Douglas, silently marking the passage of time. It stands as a lasting reminder of a golden age and a beloved monarch, forever linking the Isle of Man to the grand history of the British Empire.
