The wind whispers secrets across the fields surrounding the Millennium Stone, Ballaugh. Doesn’t it seem to beckon you closer? The Millennium Stone, Ballaugh, stands as a testament to the passage of time and the enduring spirit of the Isle of Man. This unassuming monument, crafted from dark Pooil Vaaish limestone, marks not only the millennium but also the rich tapestry of Manx heritage. The Millennium Stone, Ballaugh, is one of twenty-four such stones, a modern interpretation of the Celtic cross, scattered across the island’s parishes and towns. Commissioned by the Department of Local Government and the Environment, they were envisioned by Steve Prescott. He sought to capture the essence of the island’s history. Each stone is nestled on a plinth. Many are surrounded by newly planted trees, creating miniature groves that symbolize growth and renewal. The Millennium Stone, Ballaugh, however, commemorates something slightly different. While linked to the millennium celebrations of 2000 by its material and design, its inscription points to a different date: 1979. It marks what was then thought to be the thousandth anniversary of the Manx parliament, though the historical basis for that specific year is now unclear. The inscription, “CLAGH Y FEAILLEY MILLEY VLEEANAGH THE MILLENNIUM STONE 1979”, is framed by triskelions, ancient symbols of the Isle of Man, and lists the six traditional Manx districts: Glenfaba, Ayre, Middle, Michael, Carff, and Rushen. The Millennium Stone, Ballaugh, invites quiet contemplation. It offers a chance to reflect on the island’s long and complex story, and the sometimes-blurred lines between memory and history. It’s a place to feel the wind whisper tales of generations past.
