Jurby Transport Museum

Did you ever imagine a transport museum in a former aircraft hangar? The Jurby Transport Museum is exactly that. It’s more than just a collection of vehicles. It’s a portal back in time, nestled within a piece of history itself. Jurby Transport Museum occupies a former RAF Bellman Aircraft Hangar. The hangar, designed by N S Bellman, stands as one of four transportable hangars built in Jurby during the winter of 1939/1940. One of about 400 built in total, this particular hangar once served as a maintenance flight hangar for single-engine aircraft. After refurbishment, it was leased to the Manx Transport Trust, who opened the Jurby Transport Museum in Easter 2010. Inside this colossal structure, a diverse collection of buses, cars, and wagons awaits. You’ll find vehicles dating from 1927 to 1997. Among the gems are two Leyland Olympians, a Dennis Dart, and several Leyland Atlanteans. There’s even an ex-SELNEC Atlantean with a Park Royal body and an ex-Merseyside PTE “Jumbo” Atlantean. Three Leyland Titans, two AEC Regent IIIs, and a Regent V—the last double-decker ever built by AEC—add to the impressive roster. The Jurby Transport Museum also houses a piece of railway history. The 3 ft gauge Hibberd 4wDM locomotive from the Queen’s Pier Tramway in Ramsey sits alongside its bogie carriage. These were briefly returned to the pier for its reopening in 2021. Don’t miss the on-site shop, crafted from the former Douglas Bay Horse Tramway tram number 22. Here you can find souvenirs and refreshments. Free parking is available on site.
