Was Mathura always a city of vibrant life? Mathura, nestled on the banks of the Yamuna River, has a history that whispers tales far older than its bustling present. Mathura, mentioned in ancient scriptures as “Madhupuri,” thrived even during the Vedic period, around 1500 BCE. Its strategic location on the Yamuna made Mathura a crucial hub for trade. This connected northern India with the western and southern regions, fostering an exchange of not only goods but also cultures and ideas. Mathura’s story intertwines with the epic Mahabharata. Ruled by the Yadava clan, under the tyrannical King Kansa, Mathura became the setting for Lord Krishna’s birth and early life. It is said Krishna spent his childhood in and around Mathura, ultimately overthrowing Kansa and freeing the city from his oppressive grip. These mythological events are deeply woven into Mathura’s spiritual fabric. Under the Mauryan Empire, from 321-185 BCE, Mathura’s importance grew as a center of power. It even served as a garrison town during the reign of Emperor Ashoka. Ashoka, a devout Buddhist, built stupas and monasteries in Mathura, demonstrating the city’s acceptance of diverse religious traditions. Mathura blossomed further during the Gupta Empire, from the 4th to the 6th centuries CE. This era marked a golden age for Mathura’s art and culture. The city became a hub for sculpture, with its unique style influencing Indian art significantly. Mathura also played a vital role in the spread of Buddhism and Jainism. The Kushan emperor, Kanishka, a Buddhist patron, held the city in high esteem. During his reign, the Mathura School of Art flourished, creating iconic Buddhist and Jain statues. The medieval period brought change and upheaval, with the city falling under the rule of various dynasties, including the Rajputs, the Delhi Sultanate, and the Mughals. Despite political instability, Mathura remained a sacred site, its temples and ghats continuing to draw pilgrims. The Mughal era brought a mixed legacy. While Emperor Akbar championed religious tolerance, Aurangzeb ordered the destruction of several temples, including the grand Keshav Dev Temple, which was later replaced by the Shahi Eidgah mosque. Yet, Mathura’s spiritual heart continued to beat strong. Under British rule, from 1803 onward, Mathura became a key destination for pilgrimage tourism. The British developed infrastructure, facilitating easier access for travelers. The 19th and 20th centuries witnessed a resurgence of the Krishna Bhakti movement, with Mathura at its center. Today, Mathura is a vibrant pilgrimage hub, drawing millions of devotees, especially during Janmashtami and Holi. The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple stands as a testament to the city’s enduring spiritual significance.
