Ever wonder what happens to dancing bears after their dancing days are over? Here at Wildlife SOS in Agra, we offer them a peaceful retirement. Wildlife SOS is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife in distress. It is one of the largest wildlife organizations in South Asia.

Imagine these bears. They were once exploited. They entertained Mughal emperors and roadside tourists. The Kalandar tribe used them for income. But their lives were filled with pain. A metal rod pierced their muzzles. Their teeth were crudely removed. They were beaten into submission.

Thankfully, the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 made dancing bears illegal. But enforcement was weak. Wildlife SOS stepped in to change that. In 1996 research showed over 1200 dancing bears still existed. So, Wildlife SOS collaborated with several organizations and the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department. Together they established the Agra Bear Rescue Facility.

This facility provides a haven for rescued bears. The Agra Bear Rescue Facility sits within the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. It spans eight hectares. That is about 17 km west of Agra. Over 170 sloth bears call this place home. It’s not just bears here. Other wildlife also find refuge.

What happens when a bear arrives? First, there is a 90-day quarantine. This prevents the spread of disease. Then comes a health checkup. Wounds are treated and vaccinations are given. After quarantine, bears enter socialization enclosures. Here, their behavior is closely monitored.

Wildlife SOS staff watch each bear’s personality. Then the bear joins a group that fits its character. Finally, they move to a large free-range area. Because these bears were captive for so long, they cannot return to the wild. But Wildlife SOS gives them the best possible life.

The facility includes a bear hospital. It has a laboratory, X-ray and ultrasound machines. There is even a dental suite and operation theater. A special cub weaning area fosters rescued baby bears.

Wildlife SOS also works with the Kalandar community. They provide alternative income sources. This helps stop the poaching of cubs. Many young Kalandar men now work at the facility. They help care for the bears.

The mission is to eradicate dancing bears. Wildlife SOS aims to stop the poaching of cubs. They also educate people about the cruelty of this practice.

You can visit the Agra Bear Rescue Facility. Small groups are welcome to tour the facility. See the bears play, forage, and climb trees. Observe how they interact with their keepers. You can even watch a documentary about dancing bears. A visit to the kitchen shows how their food is prepared.

The work of Wildlife SOS extends beyond bears. They rescue elephants and other animals. They mitigate human-wildlife conflict. They conserve habitats and empower communities.

Wildlife SOS is not just a rescue facility. It is a place of research and education. It is a beacon of hope for India’s wildlife. It is a testament to what can be achieved with compassion and dedication.
