Didn’t the fishermen of Ibiza need a safe haven? Right here stands Església de Sant Elm. It offered them not just spiritual solace but also a communal anchor in the heart of La Marina quarter.
This church has a compelling story. Its origins trace back to the 15th century. It served as the Fishermen’s Guild church. Imagine the salty air and the fishermen gathering here. They sought blessings before their voyages.
Església de Sant Elm hasn’t always had an easy life. History dealt it a cruel blow during the Spanish Civil War. It was destroyed. But like the resilient spirit of Ibiza, it rose from the ashes.
In 1947, it was rebuilt. It stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. The rebuilt Església de Sant Elm retained its original layout. It features a single nave and four chapels on each side.
Interestingly, this church is also known as Iglesia de San Salvador. It replaced a smaller church from 1410. The name Sant Elm is a reminder of a dark event. In 1578, the Turks raided La Marina. They captured over 120 people who were building the city walls.
In 1785, Manuel Abad y Lasierra the first bishop of Ibiza established it as a parish. Later in 1947, the Carmelites took over. They infused the church with a simple style that remains today.
The interior dimensions are notable. The church measures 26 meters long 6 meters wide and 13 meters high. The central nave leads to the side chapels.
Església de Sant Elm also has a special connection to the sea. The locals celebrate religious events. These include a maritime procession. It features the blessing of boats on July 16. This is the festival of Nuestra Señora del Carmen.
The parish also celebrates its annual festival on August 6. This marks the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
Today, Església de Sant Elm remains open to visitors most days. You can visit from Monday to Friday. Opening hours are 8:00 to 19:00 in autumn and winter. They extend to 20:00 in spring and summer. On Saturdays services are held at 8:00 18:00 and 19:00 during autumn and winter and 8:00 19:00 and 20:00 during spring and summer. Sundays and holidays see services at 9:00 10:30 12:00 18:00 and 19:00 in autumn and winter and 9:00 10:30 12:00 19:00 and 20:00 in spring and summer.
