Ibiza’s history stretches back to ancient times. It was once inhabited by Phoenicians and Carthaginians. They recognized its strategic importance. The Carthaginians founded the city of Ibosim in 654 BC. It was a commercial fortress and an excellent port.

The island later fell under Roman rule. It was incorporated into Hispania as Ebusus. After that, vandals and Byzantines controlled it. From 902 to 1229, the island was under Muslim rule. It was known as Yebisah.

In 1235, Gillerm de Montgrí took the island for the Crown of Aragon. He expelled or enslaved the Muslim population. People from Empordà, Barcelona, and Tarragona repopulated the island.

The 16th and 17th centuries brought poverty to Ibiza. This was due to plagues and droughts. Attacks from the Turks and other unfortunate events made life hard.

Tourism began to increase in Ibiza after 1960. The island became famous for its hippie movement. It later became the party capital of Europe. People are drawn to Ibiza by its beautiful beaches. They also enjoy its pleasant climate.

Tourism has brought great wealth to the island. It is now the main source of income. The entire island of Ibiza became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. This was due to its long history and coastal ecosystem.
