Ever wonder what it was like to be a queen in the Mughal empire? Here at Jahangir’s Palace, you can almost feel their presence. This palace is a highlight within the Agra Fort. It offers a peek into the lives of the royal women who once resided here.

Jahangir’s Palace stands as one of the earliest surviving structures from Akbar’s reign. Emperor Akbar built Jahangir Mahal as the principal zenana. This translates to a palace for the women of the royal family. Specifically, it was for his Rajput wives. Later, it became the residence of Nur Jahan, Jahangir’s wife.

Imagine this palace during the reign of Jahangir. It is believed that Jahangir’s wife, Jagat Gosain, resided here. She was the Princess of Marwar and mother to Shah Jahan. This very palace housed a woman who would give birth to a future emperor.

Notice the red sandstone. Jahangir Mahal is a huge red-sandstone palace. Its simplicity and integrity make it stand out. The grand halls feature intricate stone carvings. Decorative arches and heavily fashioned brackets adorn the structure. You can see a unique blend of Indian and Central Asian architectural styles. Islamic quotes from the Quran are etched on the walls. There is also a place of worship for the Rajput ladies.

The palace complex features interconnected rooms around two courtyards. The main entrance faces west. The eastern side overlooks the Yamuna River. The central courtyard is a square. The rooms are arranged to provide increasing privacy. The farther you move from the courtyard, the more private it becomes.

Look at the western elevation. A central pishtaq projects slightly. An iwan is punctured by an ogee arch. Blind shallow arches articulate the walls. Octagonal turrets flank the pishtaq. A continuous chajja wraps around the turrets. Above this, an open gallery comprises alternating rectangular openings and stone columns. Domed pavilions top the turrets.

Take a look toward the north and south of the courtyard. Two large open-sided halls or dalans, can be found here. These halls are accessed through trabeated arched entrances. Exquisitely carved square columns support corbelled stone sections. These columns remind visitors of Gujarati Jain temple architecture. Beautifully molded brackets support projecting chakras. The roof has four pavilions or chattris. The chattris have pyramidal roofs. They are supported on square columns. All surfaces are covered in red sandstone veneer. Carvings range from geometric to floral patterns.

Consider the hall to the north of the courtyard. It measures about 11 by 19 meters. It is entered through three trabeated gateways. Square stone columns heavily engraved with Hindu motifs support the gateways. A narrow gallery surrounds the hall with similar columns. The columns support a mezzanine floor overlooking the main space. Some believe this hall served as an assembly hall. The mezzanine provided a discreet space to observe gatherings.

To the west of the courtyard entrance, you will find an east-oriented room. This room may have been used as a temple. Shallow horizontal and vertical stone bands divide the walls. Rectangular sections of different sizes contain niches. These niches could have served as small altars.

Don’t miss the Hauz-i-Jahangiri. This monolithic water tank was used for bathing. It exemplifies Mughal engineering. Imagine fragrant rose water filling this tank.

As you explore Jahangir’s Palace, remember its dual purpose. It was a secure and lavish living space. It also represented a meeting point of cultures and religions. Its walls whisper stories of Mughal royalty, power, and artistry.
