Why are there so many stone pegs sticking out of this tower? Welcome to Hiran Minar. It’s not a traditional minaret. It’s a unique Mughal-era monument dedicated to a beloved pet antelope. Hiran Minar translates to “Deer Tower.” Emperor Jahangir built this unusual tribute in 1606. It stands as a testament to his deep affection for his antelope, Mansraj. The tower itself is about 30 meters tall. It’s not just a simple column. Notice how it’s circular at the base, then transitions to an octagonal shape. Those 210 square holes you see, arranged in 14 rows, once held stone pegs. Legend suggests these pegs originally held elephant tusks. Imagine the spectacle. A spiral staircase winds upwards inside, with 108 steps leading to the top. There are also 11 arched openings, providing light and ventilation during the climb. Hiran Minar is more than just a tower. It’s part of a larger complex. A vast rectangular pool stretches out before it, measuring 229 meters by 273 meters. Brick ramps descend to the water’s edge on each side, providing access for animals. In the center of the pool stands an octagonal pavilion, built during Shah Jahan’s reign. A causeway connects the pavilion to the minaret. This entire complex served as a hunting reserve for Mughal royalty. The pool and surrounding wilderness offered a retreat, a place for both recreation and the sport of hunting. Hiran Minar, then, stands at the intersection of imperial power, personal affection, and natural beauty. It’s a curious blend of whimsy and grandeur, a unique landmark that captures the spirit of the Mughal era.
