Have you ever heard of the Eighth Wonder of the World? No, not the Taj Mahal. We’re standing in front of the NRG Astrodome, right here in Houston, Texas. It was built in 1965 and is actually the world’s first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium. It’s a giant concrete bowl, and for decades it was a place where the Houston Astros played baseball, the Oilers played football, and even George Strait held a concert with a record-breaking 68,266 people attending. The Astrodome was groundbreaking for its time – it was the first stadium to feature artificial turf, which was aptly named AstroTurf! It even had an animated scoreboard called Astrolite.

The Astrodome is an interesting paradox. It made history and it’s been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But it has been empty for years now. It doesn’t host any games, concerts, or rodeo events anymore. And, sadly, most of the time it is closed to the public. But that doesn’t diminish its historical significance. It’s a reminder of a bygone era. Stepping in front of this iconic building is like stepping back in time. Even though it is silent today, you can almost hear the roar of the crowd, the crack of the bat, and the thrill of every touchdown. The Astrodome is more than just a stadium; it’s a symbol of Houston’s rich history and a testament to human ingenuity.
