Ever wonder where kids can explore a city built just for them? Right here at the Children’s Museum of Houston.
The Children’s Museum of Houston is not just any museum. It’s a place where kids aged 0 to 12 can dive into a world of bilingual learning programs. Founded in 1980, it has become a top destination for families.
Let’s step back in time. A group of Houston parents had a vision. They wanted a place to elevate early childhood development. And so, the Children’s Museum of Houston was born.
In 1984, the museum opened its doors. It started small, leasing space from the Blaffer Gallery. Later, it moved to a larger space on Allen Parkway. But it wasn’t long before the museum needed even more room to grow.
In 1992, the Children’s Museum of Houston found its current home on Binz Street. The building has 44000 square feet of space. Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi designed it. Their goal was to create a space that felt both serious and playful. By 1997, the museum was welcoming 700000 visitors each year. It was clear. The Children’s Museum of Houston needed to expand.
So, what did they do? In 2009, the museum doubled in size. It now boasts 83000 square feet. This expansion allowed for new classrooms, lab spaces, and a bigger Houston Public Library branch. The expansion was funded by a campaign that raised over $35.5 million.
The Children’s Museum of Houston also has the E. Rudge Allen Jr. Family Education Annex across the street. It provides even more space for learning and fun.
Today, the Children’s Museum of Houston serves over 1 million people each year. Its outreach programs reach an additional 250000 people. Social service agencies and schools provide tickets for many visitors.
Planning a visit? The Children’s Museum of Houston is open Tuesday to Sunday. Entry tickets are $19.95 for adults and children. Children under one get in free.
But don’t just take my word for it. The Children’s Museum of Houston has won many awards. Parents magazine named it “America’s No. 1 Children’s Museum”. Nickelodeon Parent’s Picks called it the “Best Museum in Houston”. Forbes magazine has also ranked it as a top children’s museum. In 2024, the Museum was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
The Children’s Museum of Houston is more than just a museum. It is a place where children can learn, play, and grow. It is a place where communities are transformed through innovative learning.
So, next time you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, remember the Children’s Museum of Houston. It’s a place where imagination knows no bounds.
