Can you imagine a railway to the sky? Here at Koko Crater Lookout, you’re standing at the foot of just that. Koko Crater Lookout isn’t a natural peak in the traditional sense. This viewpoint was born from the ashes of World War II, quite literally from the volcanic tuff cone it sits atop. The “stairs” you see snaking up Koko Head are actually remnants of the Koko Crater Tramway, a military railway. It hauled supplies and personnel to the lookout point during the war.

The Koko Crater Railway wasn’t designed for leisurely hikes. It was built for efficiency, a lifeline to the summit. After the war, the Air Force used the facility until 1966. Then it was handed over to the City and County of Honolulu, becoming Koko Head Regional Park. Today, those same railway ties form the 1,048 steps that challenge hikers to reach the Koko Crater Lookout. The climb is steep. The elevation gain is a dramatic 990 feet. The summit of Koko Head Crater reaches 1,208 feet above sea level.

As you gaze up at Koko Crater Lookout, know that each tie holds a piece of history. Imagine the soldiers and supplies that once rode this metal spine. Picture the panoramic views they sought, the same ones that draw thousands of visitors each year. Did you know that Koko Head Crater’s original Hawaiian name, “Kohelepelepe,” translates to “traveling vagina”? This little-known fact adds an unexpected layer to the crater’s story.

Beyond the physical challenge, Koko Crater Lookout offers a feast for the senses. At the top, cool breezes offer a welcome respite. The panoramic vista stretches across the island, encompassing Hanauma Bay’s turquoise waters and the distant outline of Diamond Head. You can even hear the echoes of the nearby shooting range.

The climb to Koko Crater Lookout is a journey through time and nature’s raw beauty. The reward is a breathtaking panorama that etches itself in your memory. So, take a deep breath, lace up your shoes, and prepare to conquer the “Stairmaster from Hell.” The view from Koko Crater Lookout is worth every step.
