Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Son Church stands as a silent testament to a struggle for faith and property. Vinh Son Church, also known as the Church of the Sisters of the Vinh Son Charity Order, has a story etched not just in stone and stained glass, but in the unwavering spirit of its nuns. The story of Vinh Son Church begins long before the current controversy. In December 1959, the French Red Cross transferred ownership of the property on Nguyen Thi Dieu street to the Sisters. The nuns established a daycare center, a beacon of hope for the community, which thrived until 1975. Then, the changing political landscape brought new challenges. The arrival of the communist regime marked a turning point. The archdiocese and the Order were compelled to allow the government to utilize the building as a kindergarten. This act, seemingly temporary, became a protracted battle for ownership. In 1997, the authorities officially seized the Vinh Son Church property, claiming it was absentee landlord property. Their rationale seemed flimsy at best. The Sisters’ petitions and protests were disregarded. The building was leased out, becoming a dance club, a source of revenue for the local government. But the story doesn’t end there. A police raid in 2007 revealed a darker side to the club’s operations, exposing it as a brothel. The club was shut down, but the Sisters’ fight continued. In a shocking turn of events, the ownership of Vinh Son Church was then transferred to the Bureau of Railroad System Management. Their intention? To demolish the building and construct a hotel with a nightclub. The archdiocese rallied alongside the Sisters, their voices united against this decision. While the advertisement for the nightclub was removed, the demolition efforts persisted. The Sisters’ determination, however, would not be broken. In December 2007, they organized a prayer vigil, joined by a group of students, their peaceful protest momentarily halting the demolition. The Sisters’ Order mobilized its members, calling for solidarity from across Vietnam. Vinh Son Church became a symbol of their struggle, a testament to their unwavering faith and their commitment to reclaiming what was rightfully theirs. Their story echoes through the city, a poignant reminder of the complex history woven into the fabric of Ho Chi Minh City.
