Perhaps you’re curious about the Krowor Municipal District’s story? This district is one of the twenty-nine assemblies in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region. Let’s explore its origins.

Originally, Krowor was part of the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District. This larger district was created from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in 1988. The split happened on March 15, 2018, creating the Krowor Municipal Assembly. The remaining part was renamed Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly. Nungua serves as Krowor’s capital town.

In 2007, the Teshie and Nungua sub-metropolitan district councils were merged. They were upgraded to a Municipal Status as the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District. This happened under Legislative Instrument 1865. Then in 2017, the government proposed splitting Ledzokuku-Krowor into two separate entities.

Krowor Municipal District is bounded by several other districts. La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly lies to the west. The Tema Metropolitan Assembly is to the east. To the north, you’ll find the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Ashaiman Municipal District. The Gulf of Guinea forms the southern boundary.

The Krowor Municipal District’s location on the coast influences its climate. Lekma experiences a double maxima rainy season pattern. The chief rainy season begins in April and ends in mid-July. A weaker second rainy season occurs in October. Rainfall often comes in short intensive storms, causing local flooding when drainage channels are blocked.

Temperatures remain fairly consistent throughout the year. The average monthly temperature ranges from 25.9 degrees Celsius in August to 29.6 degrees Celsius in March. The district experiences a tropical savanna climate that borders on a hot semi-arid climate.

The Krowor Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 MMDAs in Ghana. It forms part of the 29 MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region. Legislative Instrument 2318 created the Krowor Municipal Assembly. It was inaugurated on March 15, 2018.

According to the 2021 census, the population of Krowor Municipality is 143,012. This includes 70,735 males and 72,277 females.

The Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly carries out the legislative, deliberative, and executive functions of Government. These functions include providing a sound sanitary and healthy environment. They also provide educational infrastructure. The Assembly also focuses on planning, development control, and maintaining peace and security.

Krowor Municipal Assembly faces challenges. As a coastal district, it is vulnerable to climate change and sea level rise. Drainage infrastructure is particularly at risk. Inadequate planning and perceived corruption hinder development.

Krowor’s story reflects the dynamic evolution of local government in Ghana. From its origins as part of a larger district to its present status as a distinct municipal assembly, Krowor continues to adapt and grow. The Krowor Municipal District plays a vital role in the Greater Accra Region. It strives to serve its population and address the challenges of a changing world.
