Bến Dược Memorial Temple

“For the country, forget ourselves. Eternally remember.” The inscription above the statue of Ho Chi Minh hangs in the air. The words seem to echo the solemn atmosphere of the Bến Dược Memorial Temple. The Bến Dược Memorial Temple is more than just a temple. It stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by Vietnamese soldiers and civilians during the resistance against the French and American forces. Construction of the temple began on May 19, 1993, coinciding with the 103rd birthday of President Ho Chi Minh. It was inaugurated on December 19, 1975. This date holds deep significance as it marks the anniversary of the first stage of the memorial’s opening. The Bến Dược Memorial Temple houses a poignant reminder of the human cost of war. The names of over 44,520 martyrs are etched onto marble steles within the temple. Each name represents an individual who gave their life for the cause of freedom. Among them are 9,322 martyrs from other provinces and cities. The temple’s design reflects traditional Vietnamese architecture. The three-arched entrance gate, adorned with yin-yang tiles, welcomes visitors with its familiar yet grand design. The inscription house features a massive stone tablet weighing 3.7 tons. It is inscribed with the poem “Eternal Memorization,” a powerful tribute to the enduring spirit of those who fought for their nation. The main temple’s U-shaped layout centers around an altar dedicated to the fatherland. Flanking the altar are two additional altars. One honors the ancestors while the other pays tribute to the martyrs, people, and unknown soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Outside the main temple stand three monumental ceramic paintings. These striking artworks depict scenes of resilience and resistance. They tell stories of land reclamation, defiance against invaders, and the collective struggle for victory. The Bến Dược Memorial Temple is not just a place of remembrance. It’s a place where the stories of courage and sacrifice are etched in stone, forever reminding us of the human cost of war and the enduring spirit of those who fight for freedom.
