“Psst did you know that you are about to enter one of the oldest zoos in the world?” That’s right. I’m talking about the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Established in 1864, the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens is the largest of its kind in Vietnam. It is located at 2 Nguyen Binh Khiem Street District 1. This green oasis has been a treasure for locals and tourists alike for over 150 years.

Admiral Pierre-Paul de La Grandière commissioned its construction. The Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens opened to the public in 1869.

Originally, the space was intended to breed animals and cultivate plants. It was also meant to supply plant species to the Natural History Museum in Paris. The zoo has undergone several expansions and renovations. It now covers approximately 33 hectares.
