“Saigon’s aerial gateway” I once heard Tan Son Nhat International Airport called. Today let’s explore Tan Son Nhat International Airport. It is more than just a transit point. Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the busiest airport in Vietnam.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport has a history dating back to the 1930s. The French colonial government built a small airfield near Tan Son Nhut village. This unpaved airstrip was the humble beginning of what we see today.
By 1956, with U.S. aid, a 7200-foot runway was constructed. The airfield quickly became South Vietnam’s principal international gateway. During the Vietnam War, known then as Tan Son Nhut Air Base, it became a vital facility. It was used by both the U.S. Air Force and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force.
Between 1968 and 1974, Tan Son Nhut Airport was one of the busiest military airbases globally. Imagine the constant roar of aircraft engines. Picture the flurry of activity as planes took off and landed.
After the war, Tan Son Nhat transitioned back to civilian use. On December 9, 2004, United Airlines became the first U.S. airline to fly to Vietnam. This was since Pan Am’s last flight during the Fall of Saigon in April 1975.
In 2006, Tan Son Nhat International Airport served about 8.5 million passengers. This was compared to 7 million in 2005. The airport has continuously expanded to meet increasing demand.
Today, Tan Son Nhat has two major terminal buildings. These have separate sections for international and domestic flights. Terminal 1 was the sole civilian terminal until 2007. The French Indochinese administration built it. It has been expanded multiple times. As of 2023, it can handle 15 million passengers a year.
Terminal 2, the new international terminal, opened in December 2007. It was constructed by a consortium of four Japanese contractors. The terminal was funded by Japanese official development assistance. In 2014, it served over 9 million international passengers. It can now handle 13 million passengers annually.
A new passenger terminal, Terminal 3, broke ground on December 24, 2022. It will include 27 gates. It will have an annual handling capacity of 20 million passengers. The project is slated to be completed by April 2025.
Tan Son Nhat Airport has three cargo terminals. They have a combined handling capacity of 700,000 tonnes of cargo per year. The airport has two parallel runways. They operate dependently due to their proximity.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport is located within Ho Chi Minh City’s urban core. This makes expansion difficult. Long Thanh International Airport is planned to replace Tan Son Nhat for international departure use. However, Tan Son Nhat will continue to operate.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport has witnessed significant events. It has grown from a small airfield to a bustling international hub. Next time you travel through here, remember its rich history and vital role. The airport is still adapting to the demands of the future.
