Did the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education always have such a lengthy name? No. This institution, right before you, has undergone a fascinating transformation over the decades. It’s a story of mergers, upgrades, and a relentless pursuit of quality technical education in Vietnam. Originally founded on October 5, 1962, as the Board of Technical Education, it began with a modest five disciplines. Imagine it nestled within the Phu Tho School of Technology campus, where Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology now stands. By 1969, thanks to US sponsorship, a new 10-hectare campus was built in Thu Duc, complete with state-of-the-art facilities and American-trained staff. The Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, then known as the Nguyen Truong To Center for Technical Education, began its journey in Thu Duc. It later became Thu Duc College of Education in 1974. A major milestone arrived in 1976. The Prime Minister officially established the Thu Duc University of Technical Education. This marked a significant step forward, solidifying the institution’s role in training technical teachers. The Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education continued to evolve, absorbing Thu Duc Industrial Vocational School in 1984. Then, in 1991, it merged with Technical Teacher Training School No.5. This fusion of institutions created the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education as we know it today. The journey wasn’t without its complexities. In 1995, the university became an informal member of the National University of Ho Chi Minh City. This led to a period of restructuring. It included the transfer of the Fundamental Sciences Faculty and other resources to the General University within the National University. However, after years of dedicated work and advocacy, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education regained its independence in 2000. It returned under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Training. The university offers a diverse range of programs. They span from engineering and technology to economics, law, and linguistics. It boasts two campuses with a total area of 21 hectares. They feature workshops, laboratories, classrooms, a football field, volleyball courts, a tennis court, a sporting event hall, and dormitories. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education has also achieved significant recognition. It’s one of the first ten accredited universities in Vietnam and has implemented the ISO 9001 management system. It also has AUN-QA Standard Accreditation for 18 programs.
