Imagine Heidelberg in the late 1800s. The university was largely liberal and anti-clerical. There were no Catholic fraternities that displayed their colors until 1887. Five Catholic students founded K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg. They wanted a place for Catholic students.
The K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg quickly joined the Cartellverband. This was a major Catholic student association. August Messer, a founder, wrote about these events in his novel “Catholic Students.”
In 1909, K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg led the Cartellverband. Eduard Christmann was the president that year. This was a significant achievement for the fraternity.
The Arminenhaus construction started in 1925. It was completed in 1927. Heinrich Gittermann designed the house on Klingenteichstrasse. The house quickly became a hub for the members of K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg.
Important figures attended the house’s opening. These included Eugenio Pacelli. He was the papal nuncio. Karl Fritz was the Archbishop of Freiburg. Ernst Walz was Heidelberg’s mayor. Friedrich Panzer was the university’s rector.
The early 1930s brought challenges. The K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg stated that Nazis could not be members. The fraternity faced pressure from the rising Nazi regime. The K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg briefly dropped “Catholic” from its name in 1933. This was to appease the government. The group was forcibly dissolved in 1935 but alumni kept the spirit alive.
After World War II, the fraternity revived. It navigated the student unrest of the 1960s. It maintained its traditions. In 1987, K.D.St.V. Arminia Heidelberg celebrated its 100th anniversary. Over 1000 people attended the celebration.
