The Affenhaus, or “Monkey House,” isn’t just a building. It’s a primate palace, a bustling community of some of our closest relatives. The Affenhaus houses a fascinating mix of primates. You’ll find chimpanzees and gorillas, engaging in their complex social interactions. Observe the playful antics of ring-tailed lemurs and the elegant movements of sifakas. The Affenhaus isn’t just about showcasing these amazing creatures. It plays a crucial role in conservation. Many of the species housed here, like the Roloway monkeys, are critically endangered in the wild. Heidelberg Zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), contributing to the vital work of preserving these species for future generations. The Affenhaus is designed with the well-being of its residents in mind. The enclosures are carefully structured to provide ample space for climbing, playing, and socializing. There are even hidden areas where the animals can retreat from the public eye when they need a break. Tierpflegers, or animal keepers, enrich the primates’ environment with puzzles and treats, keeping them mentally stimulated and engaged. Did you know that the Affenhaus has been home to some remarkable individual stories? For example, the zoo successfully integrated a 53-year-old chimpanzee named Epulu into their existing group. While the chimpanzee troop won’t continue at the Affenhaus after its current members pass, exciting changes are on the horizon for the gorillas. A new, expansive outdoor enclosure is in the works.
