Have you ever wondered about the stories whispered within the walls of Immanuel Methodist Church? This church is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, resilience, and the interwoven history of Ghana. Immanuel Methodist Church stands as a beacon of the Methodist faith in Accra. Its history is deeply entwined with the arrival of Methodism in Ghana, dating back to the early 1800s. The Methodist Church in Ghana began in 1835. A group of dedicated local Christians partnered with the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. They needed help understanding the Bible. Missionaries were sent, but many tragically died from diseases like malaria before reaching the Gold Coast. In 1835, Rev. John Dunwell finally arrived. He was followed by Rev. Thomas Birch Freeman, who tirelessly spread the Methodist faith throughout the Ashanti Region and beyond. The church flourished, particularly under British rule. Rev. Thomas was eventually succeeded by William West. The church was organized into districts, primarily around modern-day Accra. It later expanded into Nigeria. Immanuel Methodist Church stands as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of these early missionaries and local believers. It has witnessed the evolution of the Methodist Church in Ghana. It saw the church gain full independence from the British Methodist Conference in 1961. The church also adapted and transformed. In 1991, it adopted a new biblical pattern of Episcopacy, changing titles like “president” to “preceding bishop” and “district chairman” to “diocesan bishop”. Immanuel Methodist Church has been part of this ongoing story of faith and change.
