Originally called Domus Wilhelmina after Elector Johann Wilhelm, the name Alte Universität, Rektorat emerged in the 1930s after the Neue Universität was built. Today, the Alte Universität, Rektorat houses not only the university’s administration but also a captivating museum. Within its walls, the Heidelberg University Museum unfolds the rich history of Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. Step inside the Aula, the grand hall of the Alte Universität, Rektorat. Remodeled in 1886 for the university’s 500th anniversary, the hall showcases a stunning blend of Baroque and Renaissance Revival styles.
