In 1980, a vibrant spark ignited in Harare, giving birth to the Family of God Church. A young Andrew Wutawunashe, just 23 years old, spearheaded a series of revival meetings that captivated hearts and souls. These gatherings, brimming with spiritual fervor, laid the foundation for what would become a prominent Pentecostal church in Zimbabwe. The Family of God Church, officially known as the Andrew Wutawunashe World Witness and Worldwide Family of God Churches (AWWW), quickly gained momentum. From humble beginnings with only 30 people at the first official service in Harare, the church’s influence spread like wildfire. By 1985, the Family of God Church had extended its reach beyond Zimbabwe’s borders, establishing branches in neighboring countries like Zambia and Botswana, and even reaching distant shores like the United Kingdom. Wutawunashe’s leadership and dynamic missionary work propelled the church’s growth. He traveled extensively, ministering to congregations in various nations, including Kenya, Tanzania, Russia, the USA, India, the UK, and Latvia. The Family of God Church achieved significant milestones along the way. In 1981, the church formed its first choir, the Family Singers, who became pioneers of contemporary gospel music in Zimbabwe. The acquisition of Leopard Rock Hotel in 1983 marked a significant turning point. The proceeds from its sale enabled the church to acquire other properties, including Glen Forest Farm and Bethel Mission, further solidifying its presence in the community. The Family of God Church’s expansion continued with the purchase of the former 7 Arts theater in Bulawayo, transforming it into a vibrant citywide church. In Masvingo, the church constructed a large church building, complete with halls and offices, demonstrating its commitment to providing a spiritual home for its growing congregation. Beyond its spiritual endeavors, the Family of God Church also played a role in national events. Andrew Wutawunashe officiated the inauguration of former President Robert Mugabe after his victory in the 2013 presidential and parliamentary elections. This highlighted the church’s influence and its leader’s recognition as a respected figure in Zimbabwean society.
