Established in the 1930s, Highfield was one of the first townships designated for black residents during the colonial era. The name “Fiyo” which locals use speaks to the vibrant energy of the community that blossomed here. Highfield holds a special place in the story of Zimbabwe’s fight for independence. This was the heartland of the liberation struggle. It was in a house right here in Highfield that the Zimbabwe African National Union, the party that would lead the country to freedom, was born. This was also home to many influential figures in the fight for independence. One of them, Robert Mugabe, would later become Zimbabwe’s president. His former house, still standing, bears the scars of this struggle. You can see bullet holes from the Rhodesian Bush War. Highfield wasn’t just a place of residence. It was a symbol of resistance. The Rhodesian authorities considered it a hotbed of dissent and even erected a security fence around it. Residents were required to carry registration papers. Despite these restrictions, Highfield thrived. The Zimbabwe Grounds, a sprawling space for sports and gatherings, became a stage for pivotal moments. It was here that Mugabe held a historic rally in 1980, predicting ZANU’s victory in the upcoming elections. Years later, these grounds would again witness the call for change, hosting the formation of the MDC Alliance and the rally that ultimately led to Mugabe’s removal from power.
