Carl Devrient was born in Berlin in 1797. His father, a silk merchant, envisioned a life of commerce for him. But young Carl was drawn to the stage. His uncle, Ludwig Devrient, was a famous actor. Ludwig helped Carl get his start in Braunschweig. Carl’s career then blossomed.
Imagine Carl Devrient as a young man. He defied his father’s wishes. Carl embraced the life of an actor. As a seventeen-year-old, he fought against Napoleon at Waterloo. He even lost a finger in battle.
In 1839, Carl Devrient found his way to Hanover. He secured a permanent engagement at the Hoftheater. For 33 years, Hanover was his stage. He became known for playing heroic roles. Later in his career, he took on challenging character roles. King Lear and Wallenstein were among his most famous.

Carl Devrient received the Golden Medal of Honor for Art and Science in 1866. In 1869, the city of Hanover made him an honorary citizen. He died in 1872 during a spa stay. A stroke took his life in Lauterberg im Harz.
