“Who was Otto Ziegler?” I wonder as I stand before this bust. The Otto Ziegler Bust commemorates a remarkable man. He was a Czech political scientist and an RAF pilot. His life was tragically cut short during World War II.

Otto Ziegler earned his doctorate from Heidelberg University in 1925. He analyzed the importance of the election process for Germany’s political structure. His early work showed a brilliant mind focused on political dynamics.

Ziegler’s intellectual contributions extended beyond his dissertation. In 1931, he published “Die moderne Nation.” This work explored political sociology. It remains a significant contribution found in major research libraries. Ziegler further examined political systems. He published “Autoritärer oder totaler Staat” in 1932. This translates to “Authoritarian or total State.” Later, in 1936, he analyzed the professional and social structure of Czechoslovakia.

Otto Ziegler’s personal life was marked by both privilege and tragedy. Born to wealthy parents, Alice and Ernst Ziegler, his father was a Lutheran banker of Jewish descent. Both his parents later died after being interned in Theresienstadt concentration camp.

Escaping to England, Otto Ziegler and his brothers, Paul and Hans, were given false identities. He bravely joined the RAF. Ziegler served his new country in the skies above Europe. He tragically died in action in May 1944.

Adding to his complex story, Otto Ziegler had a son, Toby Eady. His son was with the English author Mary Wesley. Wesley herself contributed to the war effort. She worked for MI5 during the war.

The Otto Ziegler Bust stands as a reminder of a man of intellect. He was a man of courage and sacrifice. Ziegler dedicated his life to understanding political systems. He ultimately gave his life fighting for freedom. May this memorial remind us of his work. May it also remind us of his sacrifice and the complicated personal history of Otto Ziegler.
