Gazing upon the Reformed Church in Hanover, one might wonder about the missing spire. The Reformed Church, also known as Reformierte Kirche, stands as a testament to resilience. Originally built in 1898 in the neo-Gothic style by architect Hubert Stier, its bells were a gift from Queen Victoria herself. The church once boasted a magnificent tower. This tower, however, met a tragic fate during the Second World War. The bombings left the Reformed Church almost completely destroyed. Years later, in 1956, the church was painstakingly rebuilt. Architect Dieter Oesterlen oversaw the reconstruction. Interestingly, only the exterior was restored to its former glory. The interior underwent a complete redesign, a fresh start for a wounded building. As a poignant reminder of the war’s destruction, the church tower remains without its helmet, a silent tribute to the hardships endured. Today, the Reformed Church serves not only as a place of worship, but also as the headquarters of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, adding another layer of significance to its already rich history.
