The Herrenhäuser Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a historical landmark deeply rooted in the fabric of Hanover. Construction began in 1904. It concluded on May 27 1906. This ambitious project was made possible thanks to the generosity of Moritz Simon a Jewish banker. He encouraged the villagers of Herrenhausen to use funds received from Hanover. Additional funding came from donations and collections. The architect Rudolph Eberhard Hillebrand a student of Conrad Wilhelm Hase designed the church in the Gothic Revival style using sandstone. The spire soars to a height of 72 meters a striking feature on the Hanover skyline. Hillebrand envisioned a “Church of Words”. The interior however reveals a different story. Its proportions are balanced fore aft and in the transept. It’s actually a central building following the design of a Greek cross.

The Herrenhäuser Church survived World War II largely unscathed. An exploding aerial mine shattered the windows. The current stained-glass altar window created in 1946 by O Brenneisen depicts Jesus and his disciples mirroring the original. The north and south windows remain plain. The sanctuary features a large rose window with abstract colored glass. The central element is a stylized pigeon representing the Holy Spirit.

Originally the church seated 930 people. In the 1960s the Art Nouveau interior was painted over in drab white and grey. The central chandelier was removed. But this wasn’t the end of the story. A restoration project in the 1980s returned the church to its former glory. A glass wall was added creating an anteroom under the organ loft. Seating capacity decreased to 650. A new chandelier hangs again illuminating the space.

The portal itself is a study in Gothic detail. The tympanum above the door is framed with beautiful ribbon like ornaments and three pillars marking the vestment of the portal. Look closely The Wimperg shows three flowers. The top has a cross. Turret tabernacles finials and glare windows complete the intricate design. Above the cross there’s a rosette formed like a quatrefoil. This points to a symbolic mystery. Like the Old Testament pin hut a place of God’s revelation the church calls to mind God’s presence during communion and services. Notice as you enter you pass through three rooms and three doors. This symbolizes the Holy Trinity: Father Son and Holy Spirit.
