Can a building whisper stories? The Vietnam Literature Museum certainly does. Here at 275 Au Co Street, in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District, the Vietnam Literature Museum isn’t just a museum. It’s a living testament to the rich tapestry of Vietnamese literary history. The museum opened its doors fairly recently, in 2015. It’s built on the site of the former Quang Ba School of Literature, a place that once resonated with the voices of Vietnam’s most celebrated writers and poets. The Vietnam Literature Museum isn’t just a repository of artifacts. It’s a dynamic space that breathes life into the stories behind the words. Outside, twenty statues of ancient and medieval literary figures stand guard, their silent presence hinting at the stories held within. Ceramic reliefs depict scenes from Vietnamese folklore, adding another layer to the museum’s narrative. Inside the Vietnam Literature Museum, a vast collection of artifacts awaits. Over three floors, the museum unfolds the history of Vietnamese literature, from the Ly Dynasty to the present day. On the first floor, a pen-shaped stone, brought from the sacred Hung Temple, takes center stage. A quote from Nguyen Du’s “Tale of Kieu” graces the wall: “Therefore, the heart is worth thrice the talent”. This floor delves into ancient and medieval literature, showcasing manuscripts on materials like “dó” paper, wood, and even metal. Journey up to the second floor, and you’ll find yourself immersed in the world of 20th-century literature. Here, exhibits honor recipients of the Ho Chi Minh Prize, Vietnam’s highest literary accolade. Personal items from literary giants like Ho Chi Minh, Phan Boi Chau, and Tan Da offer an intimate glimpse into their lives. The third floor of the Vietnam Literature Museum celebrates the writers of the anti-French resistance, alongside those from South Central and both North and South Vietnam. A special exhibit focuses on the Truong Son complex and the poets who immortalized it. The Vietnam Literature Museum isn’t static. It’s a vibrant hub, hosting regular events, including a unique weekend night tour. The “Chu Tam, Chu Tai” tour brings literature to life with performances and in-depth storytelling.
