The My Dinh Indoor Athletics Palace officially opened on September 19 2009. This arena was ready for the 2009 Asian Indoor Games. Construction took only 14 months. The cost reached 546.3 billion VND which equaled $30.4 million in 2009.

Consider the arena’s design. Its competition field covers 5420 square meters. The gymnasium was equipped with a 6-lane 200-meter oval track. It also featured a 60-meter straight track. Mondo supplied these tracks for the 3rd Asian Indoor Games. The field could hold six tennis courts without the tracks. The venue was built to endure earthquakes of up to 5.9 Richter scale. It also was designed to have a 70-year lifespan.

The arena is part of the Vietnam National Sporting Complex. It sits northwest of the My Dinh National Stadium. Also nearby is the My Dinh Aquatics Center. The My Dinh Indoor Athletics Palace was one of several projects. They were built to celebrate Hanoi’s Millennial Anniversary.

Imagine the roar of the crowd at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games. The arena hosted indoor athletics and the closing ceremony. However the tracks were removed after the Asian Indoor Games. Since then the arena has not hosted another indoor athletics tournament.

The My Dinh Indoor Athletics Palace has hosted significant sports events. These include the 9th Capital Sports Festival. The 2018 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group III took place here. The 2018 Vietnam National Games featured taekwondo and tennis. Also the 2021 Southeast Asian Games included fencing and the closing ceremony.
