Time has etched its passage onto the weathered stones of Chua Chan Tien. This ancient temple stands before you a testament to centuries of faith resilience and change.

Chua Chan Tien’s story begins in 1056 under King Ly Thanh Tong. Initially known as Sung Khanh Bao Thien it was situated near the Thang Long citadel. The temple was dedicated to the two deities Tien Thi and Chan Cam.

In 1057 King Ly Thanh Tong commissioned the construction of a magnificent Bao Thien pagoda. This was one of the “An Nam Tu Dai Khi” structures of that era. It was a towering 13-story structure standing 20 meters tall. The pagoda was a symbol of royal power and spiritual devotion.

However the temple’s location shifted over time. By the end of the Tran dynasty it moved to the Phong Khanh village near the Thuong area. It was then renamed Chua Chan Tien combining the names of the original deities.

The French colonial era brought further upheaval. In 1888 the French demolished the temple to build the Hoa Lo prison and the central post office. Chua Chan Tien found a new home in Lang The Giao now part of Ba Trieu street.

Despite these upheavals Chua Chan Tien persevered. Its three-gate entrance is a stunning example of traditional Vietnamese architecture. The intricate carvings and weathered paint bear witness to countless prayers and rituals. The temple boasts numerous artifacts including 57 Buddha statues and 237 woodblock prints of Buddhist scriptures. A particularly striking piece is a thousand-armed Guanyin statue carved from skillfully crafted wood.

The temple’s current location at 151 Ba Trieu street is a serene oasis amidst the urban bustle. Today Chua Chan Tien continues to serve as a place of worship. Its presence is a vibrant reminder of Vietnam’s rich history and enduring faith. This remarkable temple continues to attract devotees and tourists. Its remarkable history and architectural beauty make it a must-see destination. Chua Chan Tien is more than just a temple; it’s a living story. A story of faith devotion and resilience in the face of both natural and man-made trials. A story worth remembering a story worth exploring.
