Tran Quoc Pagoda’s story stretches back 1500 years. It began in 541 during the Early Ly Dynasty. Back then, it was named Khai Quoc Pagoda. It stood by the Red River’s banks.
In 1615, the pagoda moved to its current location. This was due to the river’s encroachment. King Le Hy Tong renamed it Tran Quoc. This translates to “Protecting the Nation”. People hoped it would ward off disasters.
Imagine this pagoda as the capital of Buddhism. This was during the Tran Dynasty. Today, Tran Quoc Pagoda stands as a symbol of Hanoi.

Tran Quoc Pagoda is open most days from 8 AM to 4 PM. Entrance is free. Dress modestly. Avoid shorts and tank tops.
The pagoda is most crowded on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month. For a peaceful visit, come on a regular day.
