Hidden in plain sight, Gia Lam Airport whispers tales of a bygone era. This isn’t just any airport. Gia Lam is a living museum, a place where the ghosts of biplanes and the roar of MiG-21s intermingle. Gia Lam Airport was inaugurated in 1936, a brainchild of French architect Félix Godard. Its story begins long before jet engines and international terminals. Imagine Hanoi in the 1920s, a city steeped in tradition, yet embracing the winds of change. French architect Ernest Hébrard envisioned a modern Gia Lam, complete with a bustling industrial district and, of course, an airfield. Gia Lam Airport became a vital hub, connecting Hanoi to the burgeoning world of aviation. But its peaceful beginnings were shattered by the dark clouds of war. In 1940, Japanese forces seized control of Gia Lam Airport, transforming it into a strategic military base during World War II. The airfield witnessed the tumultuous years of the First Indochina War, serving as a key logistics base for French operations, including the ill-fated Battle of Dien Bien Phu. Think of the Chaffee tanks, meticulously dismantled, their parts flown piece by piece from Gia Lam to the besieged Dien Bien Phu. The Vietnam War brought more turbulence. Gia Lam Airport, identified as a major North Vietnamese airbase, found itself in the crosshairs of American bombing campaigns during Operation Rolling Thunder. Yet, amidst the devastation, Gia Lam Airport also played a role in a moment of hope. It was here, in 1973, that Operation Homecoming unfolded. American POWs, including Senator John McCain, took their first steps toward freedom, boarding C-141s bound for home. One particular aircraft, dubbed the “Hanoi Taxi,” became a symbol of this poignant moment. More recently, in 2008, tragedy struck when an Antonov An-26 training flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Gia Lam, a stark reminder of the risks inherent in flight. Gia Lam Airport is more than just runways and terminals. It’s a testament to resilience, a witness to history, a place where the past takes flight.
