In 1070 Emperor Ly Thanh Tong built the Temple of Literature. This wasn’t just any temple. It was a place to honor Confucius. More importantly it became Vietnam’s first national university. The Imperial Academy thrived within its walls for over 700 years. Imagine the scholars. They studied Confucianism. They learned Chinese literature and history. They wrote poetry. They competed in rigorous exams. Success meant a position in government.

The Temple of Literature’s second courtyard houses the Pavilion of Constellation. This beautiful structure is Hanoi’s symbol. Its image appears on the 100000 dong banknote. The pavilion’s intricate details and design are stunning. It’s a testament to Vietnamese artistry. The bronze bell inside rings only on special occasions.
Further in lies the Well of Heavenly Clarity. This courtyard contains stone turtles. They carry stelae honoring graduates. The turtles symbolize longevity and wisdom. There are eighty-two stelae remaining. They list 1307 graduates from royal exams held between 1442 and 1779. These stelae are a treasure trove of history. They offer insights into Vietnamese culture and education.
The fourth courtyard is the ceremonial heart. The House of Ceremonies stands here. So does a sanctuary dedicated to Confucius and his disciples. Crimson columns and wooden ceilings add to the grandeur. The altar follows traditional Vietnamese worship customs. It includes the five elements: metal wood water fire and earth.
Finally the fifth courtyard. It holds the grounds of the Imperial Academy. A two-story building houses a statue of Chu Van An. He was the academy’s first rector. The upper floor honors three kings. They were essential in establishing and preserving the academy. The Temple of Literature remains a place of learning and reflection. It is a testament to Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.
