Built in the 15th century Quan Su Pagoda stands as a testament to Hanoi’s rich history. Initially constructed to welcome ambassadors from Champa Laos and other countries Quan Su Pagoda became a place of worship for these devout Buddhists. The name Quan Su literally means ’embassy’ reflecting its original purpose. The pagoda’s location near the southern gate of Thang Long the ancient name for Hanoi further highlights its historical significance.

Over the centuries Quan Su Pagoda has undergone numerous renovations. In 1822 corridors statues and bells were added. A significant rebuilding project took place in 1942 under the direction of Venerable To Vinh Nghiem. Two architects Nguyen Ngoc Ngoan and Nguyen Xuan Tung designed the structure which combined the best features of northern Vietnamese pagodas. The pagoda’s architectural style showcases a unique blend of traditional Vietnamese and foreign influences. It follows the pattern of internal Cong-shaped and external Quoc-shaped architecture a design concept that harmoniously blends internal and external spaces.

A three-story roof covers the pagoda. A large courtyard welcomes visitors who then ascend eleven steps to reach the main hall. This hall is square-shaped surrounded by corridors. Inside are large gilded statues of Buddhas. Ly Quoc Su a respected Zen master is also honored here. Other figures such as Duc Ong Quan Binh and Chau Suong are also enshrined. Note that unlike many other temples Quan Su does not feature the worship of Mother and Tam Tu Phu figures that are not part of traditional Buddhist practices. The pagoda is more than a place of worship. It houses a library a lecture hall and guest quarters. The Vietnam Buddhist Studies Institute and the Asian Buddhist Organization for Peace also operate here. Quan Su Pagoda has served as the headquarters of the Central Vietnam Buddhist Association since 1980 a significant role in Vietnam’s religious life.

Today Quan Su Pagoda remains a vibrant center of Buddhist activity. The annual Buddha’s Birthday ceremony in the fourth lunar month is a major event. Monks nuns and Buddhists participate in processions prayers and other meaningful activities. The pagoda is a peaceful haven reflecting centuries of devotion and a crucial part of Hanoi’s cultural heritage. Whether you are a devout Buddhist or a curious traveler Quan Su Pagoda offers a deeply enriching experience. Take time to explore its history architecture and spiritual significance.
