Step into the opulent world of the Alsterhaus. This isn’t just a department store. It’s a living testament to Hamburg’s rich history. Imagine the grandeur of its opening day April 24 1912. The Alsterhaus then known as Hermann Tietz wowed Hamburgers with its dazzling lights and vast array of goods. It stood proudly at Jungfernstieg 16-20 a prime location in the city.
The Alsterhaus wasn’t built overnight. Its foundation was laid with 5000 oak posts driven deep into the soft Alster riverbank soil. This ensured a stable base for the magnificent structure. The building’s design by Cremer & Wolffenstein was truly spectacular. Marble and crystal chandeliers adorned the interior creating an atmosphere of luxury and elegance. The cost of construction was a staggering 4 1/2 million gold Reichsmarks.
But the Alsterhaus’s story isn’t just about opulence. It’s intertwined with the dark shadow of Nazi Germany. The Tietz family Jewish owners were forced to sell their shares. This was a case of cold Aryanization a subtle yet brutal form of expropriation. The store was renamed Alsterhaus in 1935. Sadly it’s been documented that the Alsterhaus sold textiles from the Łódź Ghetto during the war.
The Alsterhaus survived World War II with relatively minor damage. It continued its operations as a full-range department store. Post-war the Alsterhaus served as Hertie department store group headquarters from 1948 to 1961. The store underwent extensive renovations in 1983 costing 50 million Deutsche Marks. Later a more modern extension was added. A complete reconstruction took place between 2003 and 2005 costing approximately 35 million euros. It aimed for a premium range of higher-quality products within a smaller sales area.
Today the Alsterhaus continues to evolve. It’s a premier shopping destination featuring designer fashion beauty food and home decor. The fourth floor houses Le-Buffet a restaurant offering stunning views of the Binnenalster. The Alsterhaus also possesses its own parking garage. It remains a symbol of Hamburg’s enduring spirit a place where history and modern luxury intertwine. As you stand here before this iconic building remember its remarkable journey through time a journey reflected in its elegant facade.
