A chilling wind whispers through the trees. We stand before the Gedenktafel Ehem Schießplatz Höltigbaum Plaque. This unassuming memorial speaks volumes. It marks a site of profound sorrow a place where echoes of silenced voices still resonate.

This plaque commemorates the executions that took place here. During the final years of World War II the Höltigbaum firing range served as a grim execution ground. Military courts condemned countless soldiers often for desertion or undermining morale. These men were executed by firing squads.

The executions were frequent. Almost every morning in the war’s last four months firing squads carried out their deadly work. The last documented executions occurred just five days before British troops arrived in Hamburg.

For a long time the fate of these Wehrmacht deserters remained largely ignored. Then in 2003 this plaque was installed. It’s part of a larger program by the Hamburg Cultural Authority. The Rahlstedt Peace Initiative helped create a small memorial at the site. This memorial remembers the soldiers who refused to serve under the Nazi dictatorship. They were persecuted and killed for their defiance.

For a decade this plaque was the sole memorial to Wehrmacht deserters in Hamburg. Another memorial opened in 2015. It commemorates deserters and other victims of Nazi military justice. Still this plaque remains a powerful and poignant reminder. It acknowledges the tragic sacrifices of those who resisted the Nazi regime.

A Stolperstein a small brass marker was added in 2019. It honors the memory of Herbert Klein a soldier who died here in 1945. The Stolperstein adds another layer of personal remembrance to this site. It humanizes the statistics making them individuals not just numbers.

The Gedenktafel Ehem Schießplatz Höltigbaum Plaque stands as a testament to a dark chapter in history. It serves as a vital reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who resisted tyranny. It also reflects the continuing efforts to remember the forgotten victims of war and injustice. Let us take a moment to reflect on their stories.
