Did Queen Elizabeth II ever stay in a Hamburg villa? She did. Right here at the Gastehaus des Senats. This magnificent building before us wasn’t always a guest house for dignitaries. It began its life in 1868. Built as a home for the building materials trader Johann Friedrich Krogmann. Architect Martin Haller designed this stunning late-classical style villa. Its white plaster facade still shines.

The Gastehaus des Senats is more than just a pretty building. It’s a historical treasure. After Krogmann’s death the villa was sold to Adolf Oetling. Oetling was quite a man. He served on the Deutsche Bank AG supervisory board. He even worked as a German consul in Mexico.

In 1958 the Gastehaus des Senats was listed as a cultural monument. It earned its place in the Hamburg cultural heritage list. This recognition cemented its importance. The city decided to transform it. In 1965 it became the official guest house. The house is for high ranking guests of the city. It even hosted heads of state. Queen Elizabeth II was the first visitor. This was on her first visit to Germany.

The Gastehaus des Senats has welcomed many notable figures. From President Donald Trump during the 2017 G20 summit. To Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Even the Dalai Lama and PLO chief Yasser Arafat were guests. The list reads like a who’s who of world leaders and royalty. Think of the conversations held within these walls. The secrets shared. The deals struck.

The interior reflects the living culture of the past. Representational rooms are on the ground floor. A library adds to the charm. Seven bedrooms are on the upper floors. The refurbishment in 1986 and 1987 cost 2.5 million DM. This investment preserved its grandeur. The renovation work ensured it continues to impress.

So as you stand here before the Gastehaus des Senats consider its history. It’s a place where history and hospitality intertwine. The Gastehaus des Senats stands as a silent witness. It has witnessed global events and momentous encounters. It silently observes the ebb and flow of international relations. A testament to Hamburg’s rich history.
